Batavia teen overcomes obstacles to race in 5K

Last spring, Austin Porter was frustrated because he got sick trying to run a mile for physical fitness testing at Batavia High School. When the 17 year old was born, a stroke had triggered a form of cerebral palsy that affected the Batavia teen's muscle strength, Cheap Prom Dresses 2015 flexibility and coordination on the right side of his body, making it difficult for him to run. He also got winded easily and struggled to keep up with friends and family during trips to the mall or the zoo.

But he wouldn't give up.

During a Cheap Formal Dresses session last April with his physical therapists at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Austin announced he was setting a goal Cheap Evening Dresses of running a 5 kilometer, or 3.1 mile, race. He scoured the Internet for the perfect challenge and settled on Sunday's Cincinnati Panerathon 5K in Mason, in part because that race includes a giveaway of Skechers running shoes.

He worked tirelessly to get in shape, his therapists said. He walked on a treadmill. He practiced skipping and jumping and moved rings from one cone to another with his foot.

But most of all, he ran.

Austin ran around the Medical Offices building and got to know the hospital's neighbors. He ran up and down the big hill upon which Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Cheap Prom Dresses rests as doctors and nurses clapped for him. He ran in the August heat and sometimes in rain. Every weekend, Austin ran around the trail at Lunken Airport with a team of volunteers from the hospital's cerebral palsy clinic and, occasionally, some others.

He ran with a dog and a donated iPod to listen to country singer Rodney Atkins. As he ran, he talked about things like zombies, fried pickles and how to beat the Halo video game.

"Each week, he was able to go farther and farther," said Katie Hickey Lucas, a physical therapist who's worked with Austin and sometimes runs with him. Besides heading off potential weight problems, running has kept Austin strong and loose.

Jilda Vargus Adams, who directs Children's CP clinic, has known Austin for 10 years. She says what he has accomplished in the last few months is nothing short of remarkable.

"He can run a 10 minute mile, which is faster than a lot of people," she said. The Batavia High School junior Cheap Wedding Dresses 2015 wants to be a regular teen, whether he's entering his award winning photos at the Clermont County Fair, feeding the animals on his family's farm or taking a girl to next month's homecoming dance.

For Sunday's race, Austin will be accompanied by dozens of runners and walkers, all wearing his specially designed lime green T shirts. A phalanx of classmates and educators from Batavia Local Schools, along with relatives and members of Austin's second family from Children's, also plan to be there.

As her son prepared for his first 5K race, his mother says it wasn't always easy to watch his rigorous therapy.

"We thank (Austin) for his inability to perceive hurdles," she wrote Cheap Bridesmaid Dresses in an email. "We thank him for reminding us that few things are out of the realm of possibility.
